Refrigerant Piping

Refrigerant piping requires less space than traditional ductwork, allowing greater design flexibility.

The refrigerant flow rate varies through the lines with the use of an inverter compressor and electronic expansion valves, which modulate to match the load variations as individual rooms require more or less heating/cooling.

Configured as a 3-pipe heat recovery system.

Configured as a 2-pipe heat pump system.

Compressor Technology

Compressor efficiency is optimized through meticulous attention to the design details of the release valve and orbiting scroll. When synchronized, our compressor maximizes output while minimizing power consumption. The lifting force of the rotating scroll and release tension of the valve have been balanced to limit over compression while minimizing loss through leakage.

This fine tuning of the valve and scroll help make our IEER and SCHE ratings among the highest of all VRF systems in the industry.

An inverter is a variable speed drive that changes the electrical frequency being fed to a motor.

When this technology is applied to a compressor’s motor, the air conditioning systems operating capacity can be adjusted.

  • A variable speed compressor consists of an inverter and compressor. The inverter converts incoming alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

  • It then uses pulse width modulation (PWM) to produce AC to a desired frequency. This frequency is used to drive the speed of the compressor motor.

  • The cooling and heating can be varied depending on a number of inputs such as outdoor or indoor air temperature and humidity, set point, occupancy, etc.

Click and drag on the graphics above to change the speed

  • Fewer starts and stops, smoother operation

  • Quieter start

  • Reduced inrush current

  • Low running amperage

  • Increased compressor speed in cold or hot ambient conditions

  • Enhanced dehumidification possibility with varying compressor speed

  • Increased motor and system longevity

  • Better control of compressor in high ambient

  • Automatically reduces compressor speed and resulting discharge temperature

  • Opportunity for better system control of peak demand in cooling, heating or excessive electrical demand

    Best Applications for VRF

    Quiet and Comfort

A heat recovery system offers high energy-saving efficiency by drawing heat from the rooms to be cooled, and effectively using it as a heat source for the rooms to be heated.

Only currently occupied areas of the building are maintained at comfortable levels.

With our advanced control system and heat recovery units working together, each zone is comfortable and the transition from heating to cooling is efficient.

Consider an office building, at 3:30 in the afternoon on a 55 degree day, but very sunny.

On the west side of the building, the sun is shining, warming the space to the point that it could use some air conditioning.

The east side of the building is in the shade, cold, and needing heat from the VRF system.

With the heat recovery VRF system, heat is taken from the west side of the building (thus cooling it down) and moved to the east side of the building.

Because the outdoor unit isn't required to use the compressor to generate the heating (east side) or cooling (west side) efficiency is extremely high.

    - tailored to any building

For larger buildings, refrigerant piping accomodates total lengths up to 3,280 ft.

Systems can be connected with up to 64 indoor units.

    VRF Change Over Boxes:

A full line of single and multiple port change-over-boxes are offered to meet a wide variety of design requirements.

    • Fewer valves are required since systems use vapor instead of liquid, thus no condensate is produced.
    • Electronically controlled valves and a fully insulated valve housing ensure quiet operation.
    • Each valve is protected with a fine mesh strainer to ensure reliability.
    • Single and Multi-Port COBs are available to meet diverse application needs.

Click on each system name to see the piping layout

    • Single-Port COBS
    • Multi-Port COB - 4 & 8 Ports
    • Multi-Port COB - 12 Ports
    • Single COBs are the ideal choice for designs where heating or cooling is desired and each zone has individual temperature settings. Single COBs use less piping and refrigerant than larger capacity multi-port COBs. Single COBs are available in two sizes.
    • Multi-Port COBs with four or eight ports are well-suited to medium-sized areas that require either heating or cooling at various temperature settings. These smaller, multi-port COBS provide flexibility to leave open ports for future expansion and initial cost considerations including equipment, refrigerant, and installation.
    • A Multi-Port COB with twelve ports is an ideal choice for a large area with multiple zones that require either heating or cooling and the ability to set individual temperature settings. When a lower initial equipment cost is desired, designing with the larger, multi-port COB is a good option.
    • Easy to maintain - routine maintenance consists only of changing filters and cleaning coils.
    • Significantly lower warranty repair rates than traditional HVAC systems.
    • Proven reliability with Hitachi's 30 years of experience with VRF system.
    • Connected outdoor units can rotate operation and serve as emergency backup for each other, ensuring that downtime is minimal.
    • Considered the most economical total cost choice for heating and cooling
    • Reduced installation costs since there is less ductwork and no need for cranes or heavy equipment
    • Low cost of operation and maintenance for most building types - routine maintenance consists only of changing filters and cleaning coils
    • IEER and SCHE ratings among the highest of all VRF systems is achieved with superior compressor technology

YORK VRF systems provide industry leading efficiency since state-of-the-art DC inverter scroll compressors modulate the amount of refrigerant to meet demand. The result is precise comfort control and maximum efficiency at partial loads, which is the state in which most HVAC systems operate the most of the time.
